Gus McKenzie welcomed Freshman Forum members to their first Student Government Association meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“Today is a big day for these fine young men and women,” McKenzie, freshman forum director and a sophomore communications major from Monroeville, said. “They are getting their first, first-person SGA experience.”
The Freshman Forum attended the SGA meeting and introduced themselves to senators and executive officers.
“I’m pretty confident that this year’s Freshman Forum will have a significant positive impact on Troy University,” McKenzie said. “This year’s forum is capable, harmonized, and diverse, which makes it a strong one. I’m pretty excited to see them learn and grow and witness what they will accomplish.”
The Student Government Association also nominated and selected candidates for homecoming queen and homecoming maid—three students for queen and five for maid.
To be eligible for homecoming queen, students must have completed 90 credit hours or more. Those eligible for homecoming maid have completed between 60 and 89 credit hours.
Caitlin Smith, a senior political science major from Panama City, Florida, and marking and public relations chair, was selected as SGA’s homecoming queen candidate.
“I’m so thrilled to be elected as homecoming queen (candidate),” Smith said. “I love the Student Government Association a lot. I’ve been involved in it since my freshman year and this is a great opportunity for me to give back to it by representing it in the best way possible.”
Sierra Clark, a junior exercise science pre-health major from Vestavia Hills and the campus life committee chair, was selected as SGA’s homecoming maid candidate.
“I’m truly humbled and honored,” Clark said. “SGA is an outstanding organization with all that it does and all the people who are part of it. The fact they chose me to represent them is an honor.”
It was also announced that the Food Advisory Committee of Troy (FACT) will meet Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Faculty Dining area. All the food and dining managers on campus will meet with students and hear about their dining experiences.
The staff will be available for questions, suggestions and comments. FACT members said all students are welcome to attend dressed in business casual.
The next pep rally will be held Thursday, Sept. 22 in Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The theme will be “Night Night New Mexico State,” and SGA asked attendees to wear pajamas.
In addition, SGA will host a tailgate before the football game on Saturday, Sept. 24.
SGA vacancy elections were held on Wednesday, Sept. 7 to fill any remaining seats.
